Illustrator and 2D animator Sergio Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong> is based in Brussels and moves between advertising, publishing, and personal projects, all infused with his background in animation. His visual style is marked by na\u00efvet\u00e9<\/strong>, humour<\/strong>, and strong clarity<\/strong>. For BGF 2023, he channelled his playful approach to turn a Brussels apartment building into a life-sized board game<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you approach creating this poster?
Was there an idea, mood or message you wanted to convey?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This poster has a bit of a unique story: it was originally created for the 2022 edition<\/strong> of the BGF, which unfortunately didn\u2019t take place due to the Covid lockdown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During that time of isolation \u2014 when board games took on a larger role for many \u2014 I imagined an apartment building shaped like a board game<\/strong>, inhabited both by game characters<\/strong> and the players<\/strong> themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What does this poster represent to you?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I really had a great time<\/strong> working on it.
As a fan of board games, I know their visual language well, and it was a lot of fun to twist and remix<\/strong> that language while building the illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you had to describe your poster in three words, which would you choose \u2013 and why?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m terrible at this sort of thing, but let\u2019s give it a go:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysis Paralysis<\/strong> \u2013 my personal guilty pleasure as a player!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment<\/strong> \u2013 for the subject matter, but also for how much fun I had making it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escape<\/strong> \u2013 because games were a real sanctuary during that period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What memory stands out from illustrating for the BGF?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s honestly one of the most enjoyable projects<\/strong> I\u2019ve done recently.
Working with the art director was smooth and collaborative<\/strong>, and I was given great freedom to explore my ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when the BGF finally took place, it was a real honour<\/strong> to see my work displayed during the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there a detail or easter egg in your poster that few people notice?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yes \u2014 the poster is full of references to classic board games<\/strong>, but also to newer games that were released the same year I made the illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t spoil everything, but here\u2019s a hint: the chest<\/strong> you see contains resources<\/strong> that might look familiar\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
